‘STAR TREK: TNG’ BLU-RAY ANNOUNCEMENT & TRAILER

Trekkies rejoice! Star Trek.com is reporting that Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-Rays are due to hit store shelves in 2012:

Star Trek: The Next Generation will be released in high-definition Blu-ray, starting in January with a sampler of several popular episodes, followed by a season-one set to be released later on in 2012, and subsequent seasons beaming down after that.

CBS is, in fact, returning to the original film negatives, a mother lode of material encompassing 25,000-plus reels of footage, and editing the episodes together precisely as they were when they originally aired between 1987 and 1994. Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead will be recompositioned. The freshly cut film will ultimately be transferred to high definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio. And all of the work is being done in conjunction with respected, longtime Star Trek figures Denise and Michael Okuda, who are on board as consultants.

Now fans will be able to see the individual fibers of Riker’s manly beard, as well as the latex and glue around every bumpy nose piece on the aliens in stunning 1080p HD. Here’s a teaser trailer:

‘THE THING’ RED-BAND TRAILER

Here’s a trailer for the prequel to The Thing, which is also stupidly called The Thing. Seriously, did no one involved with this film have any other suggestions? What about The Thing Arrives, or the current hot subtitle – The Thing Rises? If I was in charge, I’d call it Ramona Flowers with a Flamethrower.

NEW MUPPETS TRAILER – ‘THE PIG WITH THE FROGGY TATTOO’

By now I’m sure many of you have seen the awesome trailer for the American version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Well now the marketing gurus behind the big Muppets comeback movie have released this AMAZING parody of that trailer and I am positively giddy with childish glee after seeing some of things in this brilliant clip. Just seeing the curtain rise on the old Muppets theater nearly made me well up. November cannot get here soon enough!!!

MTV ‘HUNGER GAMES’ TRAILER

Despite not having played an entire music video since sometime in 1998, MTV insists on keeping up the charade by producing a Video Music Awards show every year. I didn’t watch the ceremonies last night because A.) I don’t have cable, B.) I’m not 14, and C.) I’m literate. However, there was a geek highlight during the show, as the first footage from the upcoming Hunger Games film was shown. I haven’t read the books, but apparently they are a pretty big deal, and the movie stars the stupidly hot Jennifer Lawrence. Here’s the clip:

‘GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE’ TRAILER AND POSTER

It’s going to be difficult to write coherently after watching this first trailer for the Ghost Rider sequel, Spirit of Vengeance, but I’ll give it shot. Seriously, I think my eyes caught fire and my brain exploded after gazing upon all the craziness going on in this thing.

I guess I should begin with the odd introduction by the film’s directors, Mark Beveldine and Brian Taylor, who appear to be dead set on taking the title of “World’s douchiest filmaker” away from the current champion Michael Bay. These guys are totally obnoxious, which comes as no surprise given their previous work which includes Gamer and the Crank films. The insane camera angles and crash-editing these guys bring to their material makes a Transformers movie look like the goddamn Tree of Life.

Then there is the content of the trailer itself. Holy flaming balls does this movie look insane. You’ve got Nic Cage delivering his usual demented, deadpan performance as Johnny Blaze, ridiculous car chases and explosions, Idris Elba slumming it, Ghost Rider (admittedly looking very cool in his new burnt and crispy incarnation) throwing cars off the road with his chain and absorbing machinegun bullets, then shooting them out with a combination of hellfire from his mouth! But the coup de grace, ladies and gentlemen, is the very last moment of the trailer where Ghost Rider pisses fire. Yes, you read that right, he PISSES FIRE. HE URINATES FLAMES. Neveldine and Taylor, I surrender sirs. You have my ticket money on February 17.

Here’s a look at the poster.
