Trekkies rejoice! Star is reporting that Star Trek: The Next Generation Blu-Rays are due to hit store shelves in 2012:

Star Trek: The Next Generation will be released in high-definition Blu-ray, starting in January with a sampler of several popular episodes, followed by a season-one set to be released later on in 2012, and subsequent seasons beaming down after that.

CBS is, in fact, returning to the original film negatives, a mother lode of material encompassing 25,000-plus reels of footage, and editing the episodes together precisely as they were when they originally aired between 1987 and 1994. Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead will be recompositioned. The freshly cut film will ultimately be transferred to high definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio. And all of the work is being done in conjunction with respected, longtime Star Trek figures Denise and Michael Okuda, who are on board as consultants.

Now fans will be able to see the individual fibers of Riker’s manly beard, as well as the latex and glue around every bumpy nose piece on the aliens in stunning 1080p HD. Here’s a teaser trailer:

It’s no secret that I have a giant man-crush on director J.J. Abrams. The man created LOST, which is my favorite television show of all time; directed a beautiful homage to the sci-fi/kid gang films of my youth with Super 8 last Summer; and in the Summer of  2009, he was able to do something that I thought would never happen — he made me like Star Trek.

J.J. put together a terrific cast and made a Star Trek film that was bright, fresh, and easily accessible to non-Trekkies. Of course, many Trekkies now have a deep-seeded hatred for Abrams simply because of that — “How dare you put explosions and action in a Star Trek movie!” Despite the outrage expressed by these hardcore Trekkies, Paramount is moving ahead with a sequel, and the last piece of the puzzle was put into place today when J.J. Abrams finally signed on to direct once again. Vulture has all the gory details, which involved multiple delays due to JJ’s commitments to Super 8, and Alex Kurtzman’s (one half of the notrious Kurtzman/Orci screenwriting duo) plans to make his directorial debut.

Everyone on the Internetz is posting this music video today, possibly because it’s hard to imagine that a mildly attractive female is this much of a  Star Trek fan. This girl is super cute, but consider yourself warned -the song is super-annoying, and will burrow itself deep inside your brain like a Ceti eel. (See what I did there?)
