LASERLINKS 10-28-11

Happy Halloween, everybody! If you don’t already know, LaserLinks is a collection of news bits, casting announcements, trailers, and other geekery that I didn’t get a chance to write about during the week. And away we go….

The Avengers

Director/Writer Joss Whedon wrote and directed an entire movie in secret while on a break from shooting on the massive superhero team-up movie. It’s an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, and it features a ton of familiar nerd names like Amy Acker from Angel/Dollhouse, Sean Maher from Firefly, and self-proclaimed King of the Geeks, Nathan Fillion. There is no word on a distribution deal or release date as of yet. Source: Reuters.

Hunger Games

Here’s a new gallery of stills and posters from this upcoming adaptation of the hugely popular YA book series.

The Dark Knight Rises

Here’s a report on the upcoming New York City shooting.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Here’s a video clip of the directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, discussing how they didn’t really do much research on the comic book version of the film’s villain, Blackout.

Beetlejuice 2

It looks like a sequel to the Tim Burton classic is finally moving forward, and it will be a true continuation of the story with Michael Keaton returning as the titular “ghost with the most.”

Independence Day 2 & 3

Yep, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich are close to completing not one, but two screenplays that will continue the story of the monument-destroying aliens from the original ID4. They also really hope to get Will Smith to return and say, “Welcome back to Earff!”

Superman: The Man of Steel

Michael Shannon dishes some info on the fight scenes between Zod and Superman.

LASERLINKS 10-21-11

Happy Rapture Day: Take Two! LaserLinks is where I compile a bunch of headlines, trailers, news bits, casting announcements, videos, and other fun geeky stuff from the past week into one convenient blog post.

The Avengers

I had to leave NYCC on Friday night, so I missed out on attending The Avengers panel. Luckily, this is the Internets and someone had a camera in the auditorium. Here’s the video of the entire panel!

HASBRO IS TRYING TO TALK MICHAEL BAY INTO MAKING MORE ‘TRANSFORMERS’ MOVIES

Son. Of. A. Bitch.

Bad news out of Hollywood today for those of us who appreciate coherent storytelling in films and were looking forward to a fresh, new take on the Transformers property (or the outright death of it). Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner is currently “in active talks” with executive producer Stephen Spielberg and director Michael Bay about making a fourth and possibly even a fifth big screen Autobot vs. Decepticon clash. According to the Variety report, the fourth and fifth chapters will be filmed back-to-back to keep costs down and to give Hasbro’s toy designers more time to churn out product.

Series star Shia LaBeouf won’t be returning to his role as Sam Witwicky, but those tricky “sources close to the production” are insisting action badass Jason Statham is primed (heh-heh, see what I did there?) to take over the lead human role. Bay claimed to be finished directing the Transformers films during and after production on Dark of the Moon, but with billions of dollars in profits at stake, the studio is pushing hard to bring back his trademark ADD-crash editing, gratuitous panty shots, and un-apologetic military fetishism.

Michael, please take some words of advice: just walk the fuck away. I know there is a good film in you. Wait for an original script with well-developed characters, and combine the two with your technical prowess. The world doesn’t need more robotic racist stereotypes, or robots “ejaculating” all over people, or 3-minute long slow-motion pans over fighter jets taking off during a sunset while Jason Statham bangs a tanned blonde with huge tits as explosions fire off all around them.  On second thought, that actually sounds kinda cool…

No…no…what am I saying?

FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND ALL THAT IS HOLY SOMEONE PLEASE PUT AN END TO THIS DOUCHEBAGGERY!!!!!!!

FIRST PICS OF CAPTAIN AMERICA IN HIS USO COSTUME

At some point in the upcoming Captain America: The First Avenger, the armed forces decide to use Cap as morale-building propaganda tool for the troops, so they suit him up in a costume and send him out to sing and dance in a USO show. The costume they deck him out in is a cheesey version of his classic costume from the comic books, which you can see in these new photos. The film is set for release on July 22.

‘CAPTAIN AMERICA’ POSTER FOR CAST & CREW IS NAZI-PUNCHIN’ GOODNESS

Now this is just too awesome for words. The cast & crew of Captain America were all given this exclusive, limited-edition poster by artist Paola Rivera, that features Chris Evans in his Cap gear punching the mustache off of Hitler’s mug in an homage to Cap’s first comic book appearance in Captain America Comics #1. Sadly, this badass piece of art won’t be available to the public for purchase, but at least we have the Internet image to enjoy. Captain America: The First Avenger hits theaters on July 22, which still feels like an eternity away…*sigh*.
