Geeks can be a pretty hard and cynical lot, but every now and again a story comes along that melts the frosty, Hoth-like crust surrounding the hearts of even the most jaded Trekkies, Browncoats, or Marvel Zombies. You see, sweet, innocent 6-year old Katie loves Star Wars. She proudly wore a Star Wars backpack to school and drank out of a Star Wars water bottle at lunchtime, until some first-grade boys started bullying her about it, that is. They told her Star Wars was only for boys, ridiculing her to the point where Katie was in tears and wanted to bring a pink water bottle instead to avoid further torment.

Well, Katie’s Mom wasn’t having any of it. She immediately posted this blog, and within hours, received thousands of comments from people looking to nip bullying in the bud by supporting Katie. The story went viral, spreading like wildfire across the Internet, extending to a Facebook fan event in her name called Support Star Wars and Geek Pride for Katie, and a Twitter hashtag  #MayTheForceBeWithKatie. This is a story of fans and everyday people rallying together to teach one sweet little girl to ignore bullying, and that there is no shame in expressing yourself. May The Force Be With You, Katie!

About Jeff Carter

Jeff began his path towards Geek destiny at the age of four, at a drive-in screening of Star Wars. Since then, he's had a love affair with all things nerdy. In the mid to late 90's, Jeff was a staff writer for EchoStation.Com, interviewing Star Wars heavyweights like Timothy Zahn and Drew Struzan. He then went on to review films and write editorial pieces for several blogs in the mid 2000's, wrote and co-created a webcomic strip that ran from 2007-2010, and is currently co-founder of Dead Henchmen Productions, an independent film company based in New England.
